The “Barolo of Courage” – vintage 2020 – is the third edition of Renaissance, a collection of 10 feelings that in the history of our civilisation have given rise to collective rebirths, narrated and drawn thanks to the contribution of authoritative Italian writers and illustrators.
“Renaissance, noble words for a new humanity” a project which was launched in 2022, 30 years after the birth of the Barolo di Serralunga d’Alba, which is changing, becoming a new renaissance, the Green Renaissance. Through our most iconic wine, we want to reawaken the critical spirits of those who drink it, narrating it through three forms of art: the art of winemaking, the art of writing and the art of illustrating.
We started with the word Hope (2018 vintage), we continued with Trust (2019 vintage), and now, together with the famous writer and journalist Antonio Scurati and the renowned illustrator from Turin Monica Barengo, we present Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba 2020. The Barolo of Courage.
Courage is a word so impressive and fragile at the same time, on which we found ourselves thinking over with the 2020 vintage of Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba, a year where it took everyone plenty of courage. The kind of un-looked-for courage that comes out when you least expect it, and it becomes an unstoppable engine for proactive optimism. But no one was born courageous: you become courageous and above all, no one can make a difference alone. It takes trust to be courageous and it’s easier if we do it together.
Oscar Farinetti
It takes courage to get out of one’s own cage of certainties. The best way to do so is by reading.
The curatorship of this third feeling, with an introduction by Oscar Farinetti, give rise to the monography entitled: “Courageous people know that” by Antonio Scurati and the illustration entitled “Courage sets us free” by Monica Barengo.

Antonio Scurati
Having the courage to resist, to oppose evil, pain and oppression, brings an intimate joy. So, we must choose a side. The big dilemma is choosing whether to live among men or to live among books, but perhaps it’s actually books that allow us to live among men.
An iconic Barolo, which represents the power of the terroir of Serralunga and the elegance of Fontanafredda style: floral, balsamic, vibrant, and fresh. An intense and bright garnet red colour, that on the nose reminds of roses and red fruits, followed by spicy, balsamic, complex, and elegant hints. On the palate it is wide and enveloping, with voluminous but silky and perfectly balanced tannins.

After 30 months in oak barrels and 6/8 months in concrete, the wine is ready to be bottled: the choice of the innovative and sustainable SÜBR closure, the world ‘s first micro-natural cork without polyurethane and without olfactory defects in the Vinventions offer, guarantees the preservation of the wine’s freshness and optimal aging in the cellar thanks to a controlled oxygen input.

If it’s true that courage is a form of happiness that sets men free, we just have to be courageous. When facing fear, we must react by choosing and distinguishing. Courageous people are those who don’t remain still when facing the unknown but switch from a passive to an active condition. A dynamic vision of courage, that drove us to give birth to Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba 2020. A wine that was born from fear, that turned into courage, a feeling that has been driving our choices for 166 years. The history of Fontanafredda is one of courageous people and when you’re courageous, a feeling of Optimism prevails.
